hey all,

A bit of advice please. I have an old style consumer unit the with BS 3036 rewiwireable fuses ( horrid i know ) and the whole consumer unit has no RCD protection im fine with that at the moment. Here is the issue im gonna to replace my shower its an 8.5 and im going to replace with an 8.5 the cable is fine its 10mill twin and earth. I want the shower circuit to be protected by RCD protection so im thinking if i take a feed from the main consumer unit and feed into a HENLEY BLOCK right by the side of the old consumer unit then feed the supply into a Volex Fully Insulated RCD Board Shower unit with a 1 x 63A 30mA RCD , 1 x 40A MCB this should be fine for the job in hand ?

thanks for the replies everyone. Money is not a fator but i think the idea of wiring the existing shower feed through a stand alone RCD could be the way forward.
So is this way of doing it up to current regs 17th edition. Ive been qualified as a domestic installer not that long and im just finding my feet i have the 17th edition qual aswell.

This is where experience comes in, one thing a Dom Installer course won't teach you. Of course its to regs, otherwise I wouldn't have suggested it.

If you have your 17th edition, then really these sort of things should be second nature

split tails using

feed this

Shower Protection Unit 63 Amp 30mA RCD with 50 Amp MCB but a better make than this

and other tails into your CU

however making sure your main earthing, MEB etc etc is up to scratch. Volt drops, cable calcs and install methods are up to scratch etc etc. Notifiable bla bla. Ensure the shower unit you select is rated for the shower purchased etc etc.

or as AmpDavid suggested, take your current feed from your current CU and feed into a RCD unit providing everything else is up to standards etc
