Good morning, my goal for today is trying to find a van in this crazy world. My long term goal is to start my business middle to end of this year, took collection is coming along nicely, it would be lovely to get a van to have somewhere to put it all! Haha!
 
Cause you can get one in real decent nick with low miles for half the cost. As an example you can pick up a Citroen Dispatch for like 10 grand with 30k on the clock, or a brand new one for 18k+vat. 30k is nothing on a modern engine, the new one is just losing money as soon as you drive it away.
 
I am leasing a Vivaro 2020 model and pay £167+VAT, reasons as follows
Bath is starting a low emissions zone end of March, my old van would cost £9 a day just to drive through the center or go to suppliers. If my customers will take the £9 on the invoice I may aswell charge it still but get a new van.
No road tax to pay. I pay for maintenance but on a new van this is minimal.
It is a good size with very good fuel economy. at first I thought side doors on both sides would be a pain, but actually is quite good, got one side all shelved with supplies so open door and its all there tidy.
I considered buying a used van but the prices were silly, factor in depreciation and it didnt look so good, so after speaking with the accountant decided to lease a new model over a couple years.
It is not right for everybody but it works for my circumstances. I am about to register for VAT again so will be claiming this back.
 
I was lucky last February, picked up a 15 plate Peugeot Expert for £8k with only 19,000 miles and in immaculate condition. It was only use by a small restaurant business for going to the Cash and Carry for supplies so totally unmolested unlike an ex builders van for example.

or £100 per month.

worth the investment buying new IMO. For a reliable van that has nothing wrong and is guaranteed for a fair few years.

Just as a comparison though:

I bought a Ford Mondeo Estate in 2013 for £2800 with 67k on the clock, it's had the exhaust redone, the camshaft sensor done, a turbo sensor and the power steering pump, all at a total cost of just under a grand.

The car itself is worth around £1500 with 118k on the clock, so stands me at around -£2300, or -£24 a month, including depreciation and repairs. Not only that but it is INSANE on juice - about 70 quid to fill and i get 600 miles out of it on a run, about 520 on short journeys.

I think the buying new thing is a fallacy, especially since they never need nothing doing to them and so you still have unexpected maintenance costs. The depreciation is a lot of lost money, especially if you finance it and instead of eg £15k you actually paid £18k.

I always tell people with cars 5-15 years old who have something go wrong and think it's cheaper to get a newer car - it's NEVER cheaper to get a newer car, it's always cheaper to fix the problem on the car you have.
 
There was no finance. And yes the depreciation loss is a lot less on an older car.

However ive never had any serious repairs needed so have saved a lot in repair bills and that piece of mind that I will get to my jobs Is priceless.

I do not disagree with the second hand option, just there is another option And it’s not as expensive as you may think Over time.
