Finding work after completing level 2

Soon to be completing my Electrical installation level 2 evening course, intending to go on and do my level 3 next year. Don’t have any experience outside the classroom but I’m 31 years, reliable and can drive.

Thinking about starting to look for work once I can get my ECS labourer card, where’s a good starting point? Been looking at ads for electricians mates but they all want previous experience.

I would suggest signing up with some agencies, but with these umbrella schemes, the pay’s not that great.
You can try contacting some of the larger firms direct, London Guild, T Clarkes, Gratt Bros, FES, etc.
I would also suggest signing up to some What’s App groups and Face Book groups.

Was thinking I might try find 2nd fix role, got no experience chasing out walls etc but pretty good at wiring up lighting / sockets had understand testing

You need the 1st fix experience too mate. A good 1st fix makes an easy 2nd fix!!

That's what I mean, 2nd fix is not where you start though....

Loads of agency work about at mo. Get your cv out to them mate

Hi jonny g is zac from australia i may do a course certificate 2 in electrical trade is $3,995 dollars equivalent to €2.200 pounds in uk.but does not allow you to do work by yourself.must be supervised by a licenced electrician. In the uk i saw those level 2 courses and cost around €3.200 pounds is $5.700 dollars.but does in uk level 2 diploma or certificate allow you to do installstions or repairs by your self ?

I'm 28 and have found an apprenticeship after completing level 1. I contacted around 20 electricians close to me and didn't have any luck. Finally one day I saw an electrician at a work site close to me and I offered a few days unpaid, I've been working with him ever since. After seeing my work he doesn't mind that he won't get a grant for putting me through an apprenticeship. I used to think my age would put off an employer but don't think like that. To change career later in life makes you more driven and it shows. Put yourself out there, best of luck to you.

well I am 38 and going through this now lol, or will be going through it when I have done my level 2.

I have taken an evening job so I have days free and I am thinking of either pimping myself out for free during the daytime or push my employer (I am a maintenance worker) but as I have not even done 18th edition yet I wont touch anything as I am unsure of any implications.

Got knowledge for domestic setting only i.e. my home I do alot except no longer touch the CU.

If anyone’s interested I managed to secure an apprenticeship as a maintenance electrician in a factory / warehouse / head office. Took a while to find one though!

How did you go about it and who did you speak with like manager or direct HR etc.

Well initially I had been using the gov apprenticeship site which wasn’t going well.

I registered with one of the local colleges for the apprenticeship course and they gave me people to contact. I called one of them directly chatted briefly, sent in my CV after that then got the interview.
