so, for the past year or so i have set the goal of finding a new job as an electricians mate/ laborer and then after that, enroll on a level 2 2365 course part time. I have been slowly working through some old 2330 text books i bought on ebay and slowly developing my understanding on my own.

as you can probably tell i haven't managed to find full time work. i do the odd day here or there with an electrician friend of mine but it is either unpaid or not permanent. im also planning to spend the occasional Saturday working with environ (the company that maintain our building) to gain experience of the commercial/ industrial side of things. all this is on my CV.

my CV i think is good. i have had a variety of jobs that will compliment working as a sparks/ mate. my customer service skills are top notch and i have letters and emails from the MD of my current company to prove it. the one downside i can clearly see if my lack of practical skills which can only be developed and improved upon with relevant work experience.

in nov last year i rang 15 companies near me inquiring about full time work. some where helpful and gave me advice (not alot of work around) some where rude and some even asked for my cv. all with no success obviously. i am planning on starting my campaign again in march but this time looking further afield if needs be.

has anyone else found it so hard to find work? im in full time employment at the moment and cannot risk leaving this job no guarantee of a full time wage which im sure is putting alot of employers off.

does anyone have any advice? or any contact i could try (im 1.5 hours from london)

i really dont want the waste the past year of self study and focus i have had because i cannot find work.

im currently looking for jobs in IT as its so hard to find work in the sector i want to be in!

any advice would be most welcome

Sam

Its really hard to find Mate, I have been looking for permenant work for nearly 4 years but there is nothing around all mate work seems to be through agency's on a temporary contract which could last from days to months but you never know. I have loads of experience in many different environments from domestic rewires on occupied building and new builds to commercial work on new build schools and hospitals doing just abut every thing you can think of and it is all on my CV but I still cant find any perminant work. You just need to push through pal and go to college and start you training then try and find something

cheers Baker, i'm just worried about committing to a college course then finding the market saturated which is the impression i get from this site. i know there's no easy route to take after reading all the threads regarding domestic installers.

You have 2 things against you.

1. Your location, but that is where you live, so lets work on the assumption you want to stay local.

2. Your chosen field of work is too narrow.

Domestic Installation work is a very small part of the electrical industry, and as such there is little work in the sector, which leaves the established companies fighting over it, these are probably one or two man bands, so they will very rarely take on another person. Yes there are more houses around than other types of property, but there is an equal number of DIY Charlies who live in them, and legislation is nigh on impossible to enforce on the domestic market, so they carry on regardless.

You need to widen your horizons, and look at companies who do commercial and industrial installation and maintenance. These companies may or may not employ their own maintenance people, but if they don't then they will contract out, and this is covered by legislation. So try to expand your target audience, and get some footwork in as well, go door knocking, you may just get lucky.

Cheers………….Howard

well what a difference 24 hours makes!

got speaking to a bms engineer at work today who has given me the email for the director of his company as they are looking for electricians mates!

fingers crossed .....

little update:

i waited a week for a response from the chap in question and got nothing so i decided to ring. I've rang 2 a day for the past 2 weeks and have had no response.

I am going to give it one more attempt today then i am going to give up.

thinking about getting an entry level job in IT. Its a hundred times easier to get your foot in the door.

cheers for the advise

sam

Should never give up Sam.
In all honesty if they are not giving you a response and move onto the next company.
Somewhere you'll find a company willing to take you on.

It is tough to find any type of work that your not qualified for but just plough through it.

You'll find something.
