Although I've been involved in all sorts of sparky work I haven't really touched much on fire detection systems.

In the next few weeks I am going to be installing a large fire detection system over three floors

I know the theory of how the system works its very straightforward but does anyone know of a good reference website where I can be advised on positions of smoke/heat detectors, distance from luminaires, walls etcand maximum permissable cable length etc?

Thanks in advance

My honest advice is to involve a specialist company on a supply & commission basis.

Fire alarms are not to be taken lightly, we can all bung a bit of FP in here & there but design is best left to the specialists as there are so many factors to be considered. Also it will be their name on the cert if the building full of people burns down for any reason.

This is how most large companies work too, as it is normally specified in the contracts.

so you saying you only install it for them....?? or do they take over completely in you exp..

might be worthwhile considering a wireless system. cooper fire do some tasty kit. OK. it's expensive, but the labour time is slashed by 90%.

Supply & commission. If a detailed drawing hasn't been provided for the fire alarm but a specialist contractor has been asked for, I enlist a specialist alarm company as a sub-contractor to me, to design the system as per drawings and line with all relevant requirements for me.

I install all of it, first & second fix, (they supply the call points, detectors, sounders) etc and they commission the system. Also if it is requested they take over the maintenance for 12 or 24 months depending on contract.

Most companies work this way TBH and I have gained a lot of installation work from the alarm company too.
