hello there
i've been asked to price for a fire alarm system for a pub
they require a l3 system
the pub has eight rooms used for lodgers plus a large kitchen and a large function room all upstairs
this is above two large bars with a cellar underneath
am i right in thinking that you need a smoke/heat detector in each of the lodgers rooms
i know about the common areas and escape routes but i was wondering about each room.
also would i need an addressable panel or would a zonal be ok.
also can any body recommend a decent wireless system for this installation?
thanks in advance for any help guys

Wireless would cost some. conventional would be fine. I would use a Fire sense 2 wire system with a smoke and sounder base in each room which if its directly in the rooms would do the job for the db level to the bed head!!!
Depends on how much the guy has to spend but i find i can cable this system cheeper than an addressable and much cheaper than a decent wireless

Who's said they need an L3 system???

An L3 system is automatic detection on escape routes and rooms opening onto escape routes.

I would have thought perhaps an L2 would be more suitable with the kitchens and bedrooms covered also. Surely the CFO's input would be needed here also.

You could do a Bi-wire system, cheaper to intall. As you have stated your doing an L3 sytem, with this in mind you can wall mount your detectors above the door on the wall if you follow the regulations.

Detectors mounted on a wall position.

Wall mounting of detectors is permitted in BS5839-1, they should be sited so as that the top of the detection element is between 150mm and 300mm below the ceiling, and the bottom of the detection element is above the level of the door opening, although not necessarily above the door itself. Care should be taken when siting in rooms with high ceilings.

Wall mounted detectors in accordance with an L3 category are to protect the escape route and not necessarily the occupants of a room.

For a category L1, P1 or where the room is part of an P2, L2 category, the detector must be sited on the ceiling.

I have done a few L3 now and have wall mounted for ease and covenience.

hope this helps a bit.

thanks everyone
l3 says you need automatic detection in all rooms adjacent to escape routes.
in this pub all rooms are situated along a coridor with escape routes at either end.
would this still mean that i'd need a smoke detector in these rooms.
i'm thinking yes.
all my wiring will be in surface mounted trunking using fp cable
cheers

Rafiki are also worth a look at, very easy to fit and set up.;) sounds very similar to your Fire sense system.

I use p clips inside my trunking ,as if there was a fire the cable would stay in place for awhile. sirkit is right rafika twin flex is also very easy to install, also you can set the heads to be smoke / heat of both.
For the deaf people you could install beacon sounder bases in the rooms or , and a pager system

I do the same, I think to meet the BS spec it has to be clipped with metal clips or cable ties as unlike Pyro if it falls in a fire the cable will fail
