Hi. Could anybody please tell me what the minimum requirement would be with regards to a fire alarm system install in a block of 60flats.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks Steve

You have to carry out a fire risk assessment based on the the building construction, any areas of increased fire risk and type of occupants.

If this an actual job, i would advise subbing the design and commissioning to a specialist fire alarm company, you can then carry out the install.

I'm only asking you lot because my boss is on holiday for a couple of weeks and the client emailed me on Friday asking this question. I was just hoping somebody could give me a sensible answer so that I can get back to them. Thanks Steve

Fire alarms are a mine field.

You'll need advice from your local fire officer, aswell as your own risk assessment.

How does your company usually deal with this kind of work? If you're not offay with fire alarm design then sometimes enlisting the help of a specialist company can be mutually beneficial.

Hers a couple of guides for you to think about....

As mentioned it's all down to risk assessment with the local council, fire officer and insurers this is usually done when building is designed the client would then have a specification to put out to tender as there are different categories I've seen some with smoke detectors just in communal areas call points on stairwell and exits then flats have mains/battery smokes and heats then other jobs I've been to have detection throughout all linked to the fire alarm panel and some are set up so that if one flat goes into alarm then only that flat sounders will go then alert adjoining flats then after a time limit set more off and becomes a phased evacuation of the building as the guy said above they are a mine field we have guys in the office that deal with the design we just go install commission and maintain

Ok thanks chaps for the advice. Oxocube, I definitely wasn't having a dig at you or anybody else, your response was sensible, sorry if it came across that I was being rude, I just didn't word it correctly. I'll have to just explain to them that we will need to carry out a survey before advising them on the minimum requirement. Cheers now.
