Fire and naked ladies!

No not really, but I walked down my lane a month or so back and found a sparky mate of mine doing some work in a shed outbuilding used for storing food out the back of a restaurant.

We had a chat and I took this socket off him and have been meaning to post it here for a while.

Example of a poor quality socket? It didn't result in an actual fire, but my god.. the stink!

My fingers still smell from taking the photos!

Was it the socket that was at fault or was it the plug top? I've seen lots of sockets burned because the plug was at fault.

Don't know. I just grabbed the damaged socket off the dude for your consumption, and other's enlightenment. All cable connections on the back were good.

I would say the plug top looking at the damage to the front. Loose connection maybe or just really poor quality socket and plug top mixed together, possibly not sitting right.

Overtightened terminations in the plug often cause hot pins especially if it's on an appliance the draws more than a few Amps.

It need not be faulty connections in the plug either, especially on that side. High resistance due to loose fuse clip or fuse bypassed with wire, pin heats up, fuse clip and socket contact lose spring temper, resistance goes up more... Much more likely on L than N due to heat sources at both ends of the pin.

anyway topic reminded me of when i went with my father when he was patrolling back roads for poachers (he was a game warden)
we came across a parked car and approached to investigate
inside the car was a young couple (you guessed it) (by the way she was a true blond)
he laughed like hell but she about had a $#!T fit.
kind of made our night as we chuckled about it for quite a while
