Fire Detection Certification.

Morning all,

Due to start a rewire soon and one thing that has me stumped is this.

Client wants to install his own security & fire alarm combined system.

Basically, its a standard security alarm with the options of installing fire detection components.


I am not entirely sure how this should be certificated if at all? Do i just carry on without worrying about it?

I know we are not "obliged" to install any fire detection on a rewire.

Any pointer appreciated, to save me calling the "helpline".

This is an interesting question that has had me thinking on the last few jobs I've been on where the alarm company has installed a fire alarm system .

As I see it smoke detectors wired in alarm cable back to a panel do not comply with bs5839-6

It's installed as a grade B system but it is not wired in fire resistant cable and it can't be a grade D system as there are no smoke alarms.

I think the best way is to wire a grade D system ie interlinked 230v smoke & heat alarms, with a relay base on one of the smokes and run a pair back to the intruder alarm panel.
