hi guys,

first post on here but hope to stick around.

What i would like to know is, im currently an electrical fitter apprentice working on warships (through EMPTA) but would like to be able to do domestic electrical work on my own and would really like to know what other qualifications i would need and how i can go about it
Is it a case of doing city and guilds in 17th edition and a city and guilds in testing?

thanks in advance,
stef

Welcome along stef. (opening a small can of worms here but here goes)

You don't need qualifications to become a self employed electrician legally. What you do need is public liability insurance, conform to part p of the building regs and be able to prove your competency in court if anything goes wrong. Competence is proven by quals or experience so be careful of what you do.

On a more productive note, what quals are you going through atm? Can these be used in the domestic field, can you at least get the 17th. What work do you have in mind?

Hello Paul, and thanks for the reply.

I probably should have said that im in scotland and i believe part p is an england/wales regulation?

I dont think im doing any quals that can be used in the domestic field as such, as a fitter i do alot of installation and wiring up but no testing or anything, but its marine based work. Thats where i thought doing 17th edition and testing would add to my electrical qualifications and entitle me to do domestic work.
Im really looking to be doing domestic work, rewiring houses, electrical mods, extra sockets, showers etc - everything associated with houses and be able to certify all my work

cheers
stef

Well in that case you've joined the right forum.

Part P dose not apply in Scotland (thank God it doesn't). The 17th is a "must have" qual but it doesn't teach you anything to do with installing its as it says "wiring regulation". To learn how to become a domestic electrician you will need to go to college one day a week for a few years or do a fast track course (but these don't suit most people and are expensive). Have a look at your local electrical college and see if you can have time off work if not its evening classes.

i would say that the theory for electrical fitting, and installation will be very similar. a lot of the practical work will be very similar also. just as there is no rule to stop industrial sparks becoming part of a Part P organisation, and then wiring houses, i would say that the same rules would apply to you.

Good luck mate,

john

thanks for the replies,

I thought about the night classes if they are available but this 2330 seems to be aimed at those interested in the industry and more like an apprenticeship?

hmm, i thought it would be alot easier than this lol.

You get your knowledge from c&g 2330 it has some specifics on what to do in elec install in domestic and industrial/commercial. But most important is to learn your method. Method can be learned easiest by shadowing a good sparky, or if you have common sense then slowly by trial and error.
