Hi,

It’s a long time since passed my domestic and industrial apprenticeship and renewed my 16 Edition. I have not worked in the field as a sparky since 1984.

I have just had a FWT completed on a house I own and done by an electrician i don’t know. He has quoted a C2 on the form. In general all good but with with exceptions to additional spurred sockets added to 2 ring main circuits and then in the testing Schedule A section 5.5 Adequacy of cables for current-carrying capacity with regard for the type and nature of the
installation (See section 522) C2 Yes.

I was not aware that there was a restriction on the amount of spurs on a ring main providing you don’t go over the amount of actual sockets on the ring?

Can anyone clarify or am i way off the mark?

Thanks

Biffa

The total number of unfused spurs cannot exceed the total number of points on the ring.

An unfused spur must only feed 1 point (single socket, twin socket or fused spur each count as 1 point)

An unfused spur must be minimum 2.5mm cable if T&E.

To give a C2 the item must be potentially dangerous, not just non compliant.
For example if you have a spur which feeds a SFCU for the boiler (3A fuse) and another SFCU for an external light (3A fuse) then it does not comply but is also not potentially dangerous.

Thanks for the answers and questions. I have actually got to the bottom of it. It is a SPUR of a SPUR, which I know you cant have. I have three options

1 One option is to derate the ring circuits and treat them as radial circuits, which would involve de-rating the current 32A circuit breaker to a 20A circuit breaker, this would deb a like for like swap. Under normal load conditions this arrangement should be satisfactory.

2.The more disruptive option is to introduce fused connection units where there are more than one spurred outlet.

3. The third option is to disconnect the additional outlets and replace with a blanking panel

Which would be best?

If you can, change the first socket to a FCU
