Doing a rewire at the moment on a total refurb in stone cottage. Internal walls have been taken back to the stone and are to be lime plastered. Looking for any tips on how to mount steel knockout boxes to very unenven stone that will then be plastered in. Drilling and screwing is a pain as its solid granite with very flakey render in between.

lol sorry welcome to my world living in wales we get it all the time , there are a few ways , good sds drill and some quality masonary bits, it will drill , what i do is drill the holes plug and then leave the boxes loose to hold them in position but not fixes and glue them on with bonding plaster when the plaster is dry tighten up the screws , the other way is to scrape the joints out and hammer in some wooden wedges and fix to them one way also is to use the little yellow plug and drill shallow holes they will fix but my first option is the one i tend to use ,to make it stick better use some unibond on the walls befor you add the plaster sticks like crap then

Stick them on with some bonding plaster. Put some dirty water into the mix and this will make it go off quicker. Mix it thick and secure your back box as if you were laying a brick put loads on and it will be OK. I use this method when the bricks etc in normal walls falls apart.

Cheers.........Howard

i find that the 1 coat plaster from b&q is good for fixing boxes. it sets like concrete and if you pee in the mix it goes off real fast.

Bonding is good but as it sucks the moisture out of it's surroundings i would be worried about the lime plaster reacting badly with it. Best to ask the guy doing the plastering if he could suggest something good that sticks like the proverbial to a blanket.

I recently had a bad time fixing where the walls just crumbled so bought a few tubes of Fischer chemical resin. Sets like steel. We had some left and glued my mates metal lunchbox to the roof of his van and it is still there now. Thought it would stick a little but when you pull it, the whole van moves and it doesn't come loose.

Worked with a few good ones and a few mad ones too. The only one that really sticks in my mind was a subby called Dennis who plastered out a fire damage job in a stately home we worked on with my old firm. On a rendered wall he did all my boxes were plastered up to perfectly including all the gaps inbetween runs and the boxes themselves were cleaner after he'd finished then they were when I originally installed them! The second fix was nothing short of a dream. He wasn't an easy bloke to work along side I must admit but he did an amazing job. Shame he's long retired by now.
