I have a customer who would like a flood light at the side of there house, They dont want a standard 150w-300w or G9 halogen type fitting.

They asked about the option of 1 large powerfull floodlight about loft hight facing straight down and spreading the light across the distance of the side of the house.

I was thinking of either of these 2 items.. Either one would be switched by a PIR

Im not too hot on the output of specific floodlights and not sure of there exact performance..

What do you think would be better for the customer and give the most light?

The SON (second one) would give you more light by far - they are available in up to 1000W. This could even be a metal halide/mercury which gives a white light instead of yellow. Downside to these is that when they strike they take a while to reach full brightness - up to two minutes possibly.

The compact fluorescent one is approximately equivalent to a 200/300 watt halogen but it strikes immediately so is more suited to security applications. Watch your PIR as some cannot switch high frequency lighting which the compact fluorescent fitting probably is.

This unit is British made (I think) and can come complete with a PIR:

Exterior Lighting - Smart Flood - ASD Lighting Plc

Good units. Cost about £60 plus VAT.
