Floods for a Golf Driving Range

Hi guys, been asked at short notice to put in a price for a job.

It's an existing driving range, they have put in an extra 6 covered bays.

They are now looking those to be lit along with the area in front that users will be hitting onto.

They are looking for the first 125yds to be well lit, so my question would be what light and wattage would you recommend to achieve this, the client had suggested LED with the possibility of swapping over the current lighting to LED.

However I'm uncertain as to whether LED can reach those distances satisfactorily.

Any advice much appreciated.

what are the current levels at the other bays ?
I would be going for metal halides for sheer output
LED's mostly don't come near the output of HID lighting.
What are they using at the other bays ?

We have just done some lamp replacement at local driving range and they had 1000w HPSodium lamps this was built in 90's and think HID would be used today.

Metal halides for me too, big ones and high mounting for that long distance, don't be surprised if 1.5-2KW lamps from a 415V supply are required. LED is likely to be totally unsuitable. Such lights can sometimes be supplied with special reflectors/lenses to thrown the light out in a specific direction. Most manufacturers can supply photometric information for their products.

We have just used some 1000w led floods from a company called Minisun, they certainly chucked a lot of light out. Our wholesaler said that they are equivalent to 2kw halide, very impressed with them.

I wouldn't rule out LED, with this option you may need to demonstrate a pay-back period to the client to warrant extra costs. It may prove lucrative to provide an option to replace all existing based on energy and maintainance savings. Have you Identified the existing installation. Can you establish lumen output for the lamps and LOR for the existing luminaries. Information available from manufacturers in both counts. This will give you a good idea of the new LED / SON requirements. Does the client have a technical specification to work to i.e. British standard, sports England guidance etc. Let us know you get on.
