Hi im currently working on a secondary school new build which is relativelt close to completion of main build but has a while left with handover, snagging and various other things regarding decommisioning of old school after handover and outside works.
Our cuurent foreman is leaving 3 weeks this coming friday and i have been approached to take the job on.
I am keen to do it and work as a subby to small elec firm. After handing in notice foreman put my name forward to boss whos happy for me to take it on.
Now question is we have to go to negotionating table.
I dont have a clue what i should be looking for as extra for running the job????
As i say im working for him on a self employed labour charge inly basis. Will have apporx 12 bllokes under me and it will be my first time as foreman.
Ill lay my card son the table and say at the mo im on 15.50 p/h, 45 hr week.
What should i be looking for on top?
Dont want to ask for too much and dont want to sell myself short in case gos well and he asks me to do another job after and then im stuck on lower deal?
Any advice would be great.
Only thign i got to go by was when i was an apprentice with a large national company foremen used to get 1 quid an hour more and always booked 2 hours more than what was being worked each day.

If your boss has a set rate that's the same for every operative, then ask for a quid more on top.And if you're subbying and your happy with the money anyway, keep quiet, put your feet up and don't get into money arguments with you're labour or you could be running a job without any men ! In my experience, company men hate it when a subby is running the show because they know they're out to make a big impression.Ever been kicked out of the nice warm snap cabin bang on time to be back onto the cold horrible site by Mr A.Jobsworth?

Only 3 company blokes on job rest are subbys like me. Same crew of blokes who have been together on and off for 4 years, know all of them well and relaxed with everyone. I don't plan on changing anything as things run well as are, Il just be the one on office communicating with main contractor ect.
So a quid an hour is what I should be looking for? Or should I go for more? 45 quid a week don't seem worth the hassle.

When I take a Job on as a site foreman I arrange the Rate to be the same as the other electricians on site, but I ask to be paid an extra hour per day, which most companies seem to agree to!

Our foreman are usually paid technicians rate, whereas the blokes on the books are on either electricians, or approved electricians rate. The difference is approx ÂŁ1.70 an hour IIRC. I think they book an extra hour or half hour per day as well. As you say, 45 quid may not be worth the hassle, but if its a fairly straight forward job, its probably worth doing it for no extra, as being a foreman and not having to get your hands dirty, and choosing your own tea breaks etc is pretty nice;)

Sintra, what qualifies as a foreman on your firm, would a bloke running a 10 week job, with between 2 and 4 blokes get the tech rate+ an hour?

No we have 3 foremen how look after the larger jobs with 10+ men. There are normally 2 of these guys looking after jobs abroad and 1 back home.
The smaller jobs with 2 - 4 men are run by an approved electrician how is paid as an approved electrician.

cheers guys for your details, still waiting for the actual boss to turn up to negotiate a deal with me so watch this space, hoping to catch the existing foreman on his own 2moro to see if he wants to reveal his deal and what i might get offered as hes been with this guy for about 4 years as foreman.
