Has anyone ever been asked to falsely sign off a periodic inspection report? I am an employee on a firm, not sure how to go about tackling this? Another spark asked me to do this today, I obviously am not willing to do this but im not sure where to take it from here? I.E talk to the guvnor or what?

Hi eric, no never been asked that but asked many a time to "certfy" some work that turned out to be a bag of pants from an unregistered muppet. The answer is always the same

I once got asked to sign off a test sheet by a guy I was working with. It was his turn to test a job and I knew he had made up the results. Needless to say he got a two word answer.

If it's your name on the cert you'll be the one in the cack if something goes wrong...which is why you never cert someone elses job.

In your position mate I'd ask him why he doesn't want to sign the cert himself, maybe it's just my suspicious mind but there must be something wrong there

Cant see why a pir would need to be

It is purely an inspection and not covered by any rules associated with usual certs so no reason why the spark cant sign it himself

Unless said spark has not actually done the testing and doesn't want to be caught making up PIR results

I got asked to sign off a test sheet for emergency lighting and fire alarm on a night club once. thats after we tested it and found it all to be in need of replacing. all the lights were out after 15 minutes and the fire alarm was a bag of old spanners. needless to say he was told no in no uncertain terms.

turned out a few weeks afterwards the place went up in flames. Just goes to show whos name would have been called upon if we had have signed it off as ok

Hi Eric, This is very fishy, if all that is required is a signature, then why was your college not prepared to do it himself?
Phil's post illustrates the possible pitfalls of doing such a thing for him. The only way of you doing this would be to carry out a full inspection and test from scratch and completing your own PIR for the installation.
Talk to your boss, advise him of the situation. State that you are prepared to carry out a PIR from scratch if he wishes, but you are not prepared to sign off and take ownership for an installation that you have neither inspected or tested.

but if he has or hasnt there is no reason as to why he couldnt just sign it himself unless he knows something is not right and doesnt want to take responsability for it. he has no argument as anyone (supposedly competent) can carry out a pir.
