I think I am in the right section for this type of question, so here goes.......I have my C&G 2351, C&G 17th Ed. Update (forgotten the exact C&G number at the moment), and my AM2.

The problem is I need to get my NVQIII to be able to apply for proper accredited Electrician grading with the JIB. Also, I am 37 years old and so finding an employer who will let me do this is pretty difficult, more so now with the economic downturn and maybe they feel that I would disappear after gaining the NVQ or something like that, I am not sure. I have twelve years experience in the Electrical Contracting industry, mainly industrial and commercial, and it is a shame to waste this apart from I really do enjoy it too.

Can anyone offer me some help and guidance so that I can get to where I want to ?

Thanks

Gareth

Without employment, you can't do the NVQ Level 3, as it is work based learning. But, self employment is allowed, so you could do it that way if you choose to go self employed. At 37, you or (or your employer ) will have to pay for the NVQ, as there will be no funding available for it, but that said, it is always worth asking a local training provider about funding, cos from time to time it can be available for a variety of reasons to a variety of people.

Cheers..............Howard

Thanks Howard,

Am I able to work as a self-employed electrician without a JIB card ? I didn't know I was allowed to do that as I thought that was what the card was for. With all these 'Cowboy Trader' type programs and Part P information floating about I have found it difficult which is why I, mostly, find employment through agencies.

No problem not having a JIB card, but it may restrict you from going onto/into certain sites if it is a requirement of entry.
If you are doing agency work, then you will be fine, and it will be even easier if you go to the same places quite regular, because you will be able to get witness testimony from people who have seen you work and this can be used as evidence in your NVQ. Make sure that whoever you do your NVQ with, gives you good advice, and gets you working on the correct units for the type of work you do, otherwise you will hit problems. You should also be allocated to an Assessor, and he/she should see you from time to time, to make sure you are making progress. I see all my apprentices every 4 to 5 weeks, and they can email or text me at any time in between.

If you need any help, PM me.

Cheers..........Howard
