We recently installed a couple of tripower inverters that need to be set to G59 protection settings. Unfortunately they got set to G83 using the dials (5-8-2), which I didn't think would be too much of a problem as I'd picked up on it within a few hours of it being set.

However, I couldn't find any G59 setting for the dials in the manual, and it doesn't seem to give a G59 setting using the grid guard code either.

I'm going to do a firmware upgrade anyway to install optitrac, so I'm hoping the new firmware will have G59 settings on it, but I'm a bit baffled by this as SMA list a G59 type tested approval, and have the test certs etc for it.

I'm thinking of manually setting it to G59 settings, but presume this won't then be type tested.

anyone else had this before / know how to sort it out?

Hi Gavin, it's very simple..

Just login in using sunny explorer, select the inverter enter your grid guard code (you do have one of those?), then go to Settings, Grid, edit, Select G59 from the country settings, save, them I would log out and in again to make sute it has accepted it, - no need for grid guard this time, just go to settings / grid to make sure it has G59.

At the same time have someone watch the inverter, - it should reboot it self to G59.

Then do the next one.

The downside ... G59 kicks out at 254V, it doesn't have the 263V upper limit of G83, so I hoe you've already checked the incoming voltage and you don't have too long an AC run, or at least you've put in a decent size cable... Wev'e regularly had to put in 35mm 4 core even for some short runs (20m) to make sure that we get an absolutley minimum voltage drop.

that's what I thought would be the case, but there was no G59 option listed (yes we have a grid guard code).

Hopefully the firmware upgrade will sort that out, I guess we must have somehow ended up with a couple from an old batch or something.

Grid voltage was 235 or so when we measured it, so I doubt it'll be a problem, and it's only an 8m run to the inverters, which we ran in 6mm 5 core SY with a separate cable per inverter (2 x 12kW).

thanks for confirming that the G59 option ought to have been listed though, that was kinda what I hoped someone would confirm.

I have just checked on my Tripower at home and yes, G59/2 appears selectable in the drop down box. I was a little surprised because when I first installed my inverter I could not find it if my memory serves correct, but it did not matter as I am operating it under G83/1. I suspect it was added in the firmware upgrade that added optitrac global peak.

well, for future reference, the firmware update did sort it out, the G59/2 option appeared in the list along with optitrac, and all was sorted.

right pain in the backside though as it was the end of the day when we were commissioning and noticed this, and I don't like starting firmware updates at a point where it's possible for the light to go while the update is taking place, so I didn't fancy risking updating 2 inverters at that point.

These have obviously been kicking around at the back of someones warehouse for a long time then.
