Hi,
Does anyone know where I can find G9 sockets that aren't push fit?
I have stranded 2 core cable and don't want to solder the cable ends as it's not something I've done before and I can only find g9 sockets that cables push into (seemingly for solid core).

Is there a particular term for sockets that cables are screwed into so I can search better?

Alternatively, if soldering (tinning?) is safe and easy for an amateur can anyone advise on how to go about this please?

(creating cluster pendant with 8 cables/g9 leds)

Thanks

....just discovered ferrules....opinions?
Would tinned copper be the best? Thanks

TL;DR
Is there a G9 socket for screwing in stranded cable? or how do I solder the stranded cable ends

You won't get a stranded wire with a ferrule into a push fit lamp holder terminal without damaging it. The wire with a ferrule will be too large in diameter. Those types of lamp holder just aren't designed to be used with fine stranded wire so doing this in any other case than a DIY project isn't recommended and could even be illegal.

Often there's a pin hole or small lever behind the push-in terminal that releases it to allow a wire to be removed. I'd try pushing that release and see if it will then accept a stranded wire and grip it satisfactorily.

At a push, I'd try lightly tinning the wire with solder but if you have excess solder on the wire it's also going to cause problems.

Ah ok, thank you - do you know if non-push fit g9 sockets exist? Thanks, I just don't feel confident soldering

OK, thanks
Just found this tutorial using ferrules with pushfit....It's not a G9 socket but wonder if the holes would be the same size

This might be a daft question but can you use solid-core wiring? Does it have to flex in use? Tinning stranded wire to insert into a terminal can cause problems as the solder creeps out under pressure, although might be OK with push-fit terminals that apply constant spring tension. I don't like simple tube ferrules in this type of terminal as they don't always apply enough pressure to maintain good contact between ferrule and cable. So I would definitely look at options to at least make the last hop of wiring into the socket with solid.

Thanks - I wanted to use braided cable and I don't think that comes solid. There will be several strands hanging down for a cluster light so It's a major feature of the light. I've read a few places where people have successfully folded and twisted the strands for push fit so that may be my only option.
Thanks

I'd personally very lightly tin the strands. Obviously I've not seen it first hand though. And you would need to be sure that the terminal had a good form hold.
