Gaining loft access

What's the best way to gain access to a loft? I'm a fat bloke, when i pull on the loft hatch to climb up the whole ceiling feels like it's going to give way! It's one of those things that sounds simple in theory...

A ladder would seem to be a good starting point, I am not light! and I have had no problems with getting into lofts, but I would not be pulling on the hatch.

If you're concerned about your stoutness it's quite simple, eat less and do more. Get a dog and take him for walks you lazy fat .......

If you haven't got wedged in the hole yet, you're not that fat!
Otherwise, adopt a smooth pulling action, with a slow initial pull and avoid rapid or jerking movements.
Cracked ceilings will be a thing of the past.

If you're having to pull on the loft hatch frame to pull yourself up, your ladder is too short. Get one that's long enough to protrude into the loft.
