Hi Guys and girls,

This is my first post so go easy !!

I want to run power out to my garage some 40 m away, recently built house so all new wiring and consumer uint. the builder ran a duct under ground with draw wire so no problem getting cable out there. My question is do i need to install a seperate consumer unit in the garage or can i just wire a radial straight from the house consumer unit in to the garage, only want 2 double socket and a light.

Many thanks in advance graet forum by the way!!

100% new consumer unit for me. Lights and sockets on seperate MCB'S.

Have you done your cable calcs?

Hi Electricalserv,

Thanks for the quick response, probably not going to do myself. Just trying to keep the cost down sparks i have spoke to said if i have seperate consumer unit need earth stake installed and costs goes up etc etc. Just thought for couple of sockets and a light could get away with not having a new consumer unit that all ?

Thanks again

Why do you need an earth stake? Is your install a TT system?

Can't you just use SWA?

You don't need an earth rod for PME.
It's just often cheaper to install one rather than running a 10mm² bonding conductor.
Although, from the sound of things, there's nothing requiring bonding in the garage.
I suggest you either inform your electrician to install without a rod, or get someone else.

As Spin quite rightly states, there is no need for any rods on this garage installation. If there was for argument's sake extraneous services in this garage, such as a water or gas pipe, then things could well change. But then only because of the cost implications of running a separate 10mm bonding conductor. There are far too many sparks out there, that have no idea of the PME requirements, and will rod just about anything outside of the main house....

Hey!! 40m on a recent build house?? Most houses these days are built on a postage stamp sized plot of land!!!
