Hi i have recently brought a new house (from my dad). However his garage 10m at the bottom of the garden is powered from a 13a fused rcd spur in the conservatory. the cable runs 2.5mm Twin E down the fence in PVC conduit into the garage then into a junction box split to power a ring main of 4 S/O and 2 lights via a fused switch spur 5a.

This isn't right i know. but would it be 'acceptable' if i was to get a CU put in the garage and then feed a lighting circuit and S/O circuit from the CU in the garage, leaving the supply as a 13A RCD spur? i know ideally it needs to be fed from HOUSE CU but is it absolutely necessary to comply with IET regs

What are you planning on using the sockets for?, oh yes lol

Starting again IS the best idea. But what are the regs surrounding the supply to the outbuilding? why can it not be fed from a Fused RCD spur from a ring main if the cable feeding the outbuilding was rated higher than the fused spur supplying it? why is necessary to have its own supply from the House CU. assuming the rest of the circuit onwards was correct, SWA into a DB. Thankyou

Why do you think that?

I don't know, that's why i'm asking. I'm not yet qualified, i've just started my training. why can it not be fed from a 13A fused spur, providing thats all the load required? where can i find regs for outbuildings ect.

Who is saying it is necessary to have its own circuit?

It can, it's fine. You have answered your own question really as there is no reason you cant.

There are hundreds of thousands of garages connected like this. As I put in my first post, not the ideal way to do it but it all comes down to the design load and route for the cable.....

If you have just started your training then you'll know that the regs are there for a good reason. Of course it is necessary to comply with them.

If you chose to disregard them and do a half arsed job and somewhere down the line you sold the house then someone got hurt or killed because of it do you think "I've just started my training" would be a worthwhile defence?

No no no, don't be silly!
Why do you think the regs are there?
Just do wth you want to mate, no one will care if you meet a horrible painful fiery death. Except the family who love you and you're going to leave behind :)

Im saving my regs books for the wood burner , I will be able to put them to good use at last,,
