Garage wiring

I don't have my regs book on me at the moment so looking for some advice please!

I have been asked to install power to a garage, at the moment there is a light which is fed from the d/b to an FCU in the garage (about 5m away), it's on a 16A MCB protected by a 30mA RCD. The cable from the d/b to the FCU is currently 2.5mm. What are the regs about installing a small ring and the lighting from 1 FCU? or would I need to get a 2way d/b in the garage? Would the cable from the house need upgrading?

He only wants 2 double socket outlets in the garage and 2 x lights (1 x fluorescent and 1 x spot light over work bench).

so what is a small ring rated at?

how about a 20A mcb at the supply mains board then put a 'garage board' in the garage with a 16A for the socket radial circuit and a 6A for the 2 flori's

LOL just realised. A ring with 2 sockets

Ok a radial, but would I need to upgrade the cable from supply main board to the "garage board" or is the 2.5mm sufficient!

The only reason to upgrade the cable is either due to additional load, distance or route etc.

2.5 is fine on a 20A mcb.

It all depends on what the homeowner is going to be using in the garage.

Would the garage board also need a 30mA RCD or is the RCD at the supply board sufficient?

It is sufficient as long as it isn't a single rcd for whole board and it tests ok

It's not protecting the whole board no, its currently got the garage light, the house sockets and the shower.

To keep the cost down why don't you install a spur for lighting (down rate fuse) and two sockets ..

I did one last week.

I ran 2.5mm from the main CU on a 32A breaker into a garage CU, the garage CU had a 30mA RCD, I then took a 16A for a radial and a 6A for 2 x floris. I also ran it from the RCD side of the main CU to protect the cable run that went through to the garage via wall mounted conduit.

I was going to run 6mm from the CU as the garage CU came with a 32A for a ring, so to save money I popped in a radial on a 16A.

A few weeks back I also did one for a tight sod!!.. To save him money I FCU'd it at both sides of the circuit and then ran a 2 gang socket from the FCU in the garage and then ran a fused spur from that for a light.

Sorry I thought you said you ran a 2-5 on a 32 amp breaker for a second???

getting back to the original question why not run the 2-5 on a 20 amp with the sockets on it then put a switch spur up for the lights
