I have some electrical cables in the garage that cross a gas pipe at 90 deg.

Am I right in thinking that there should be 25mm separation or the gas pipe wrapped in insulation / PVC? Would it be ok to acheve this by slipping a PVC waste pipe around the gas pipe or is there something available that's made for the job?

You are right about the separation and I think sleeving the pipe with some waste pipe (40mm) is a good way to achieve this.

The "other way" is to chop a piece out of the gas pipe & solder in a full crossover and run the cable underneath it, but I think you'll find that a lot of hassle if you're not familiar with pipework for gas.

Thanks Georgie. It's a steel gas pipe so be a pain to alter it.

Oh aye ..... that's not easy for you - or me. I can manage copper pipe, but not steel, and being steel it's going to be quite large in diameter, so forget what I said about using 40mm waste pipe and use whatever diameter plastic pipe you need to give you that 25mm separation.

Nothing wrong with having two trades. I've made a good living from getting stuck in and learning how to do things on the job (accepting that some trades have a safety consideration of course) - fortune favours the brave and all that.
