Hi Everybody,

My employers are telling me that as part of my job I have to service gas generators.

The genny's are bottle fed, and i am expected to change spark plugs, filters, oil, and GAS HOSES. Can they make me do this without formal training ie. gas safe, acops or whatever.

Seems to me that they are taking liberties and breaking the law but i cant find any info about it anywhere !!!!!

Any help would be greatly appreciated. :) :)

Maybe i'm wrong but i don't see why i should be MADE to do this ???

( i am trying to give up smoking at work in the mean time though!!!!)

Are these generators for hire? You should have an industrial “gas safe” certificate if they are. I can’t remember if it’s ½ or a full day course. The company I did mine with had it done “in house” for all tradesmen.

No they aren't for hire, they are fixed in telecoms cabins, but they are fed by gas bottles.

I'm confused :/

You need to be competent to inspect the hoses, flash back arresters, regulators and bottle fittings. Mainly to recognise the test dates and to ensure they are regularly tested by a recognised inspector. Repairs to hoses can be done but require the correct tools and fittings.
