Gas Meter Room with Water Heater also Installed

A large Commercial/Industrial HQ type building with Large Gas Meter installed within its own Gas Meter Room 1M W x 2M L x 3M H approx
While investigating a suitable cable route
I was concerned to discover that a water heater is fitted adjacent to the Gas Meter.
Does any one have any observations re close proximity of the water heater to the Gas Meter
within the Gas Meter Room ?

In a well known london building there is a 8" water main entering into the basement and then rising through the building but for about 3 metres where you have a motorized valve, and within 5 metres of it is the mains incoming cabinet!!!

I'm sure there is a wick of building regulations now concerning this, after all the H&S Exec must have something to do, but I'm sure there are 1000s of building with some such arrangements all over the country.
