Hi everyone, I've been out of the electrical trade since April this year (by choice)my last job was working for Vodafone not directly, but changing their permanent supply units up and down the country. just recently I've been asked to do some house bashing. I'm level 2/level 3 qualified 2330 I started in electrics in 2008 my question is. The people I'm now working for buy and let/sell houses and shops they want me to install and test. Would I need to get my part p?

bugger part pee course. don't waste your money. part p is not a qualification, it's a building reg. can be downloaded from planning portal...... to test, you need to be competent to do it. 2394 and 2395 are the qualifications, but not essential.

Hi and welcome Mark

If by Part P you are referring to becoming registered with a Competent Person Scheme, then Ideally yes is the answer or you will have to contact and pay LABC each time you have to complete a notifiable job, around my area this costs ÂŁ150 a time.

But if you are referring to Part P as a course then listen to Telectrix's advice ^^

Neil
Thanks Neil

So from what I gather I can install test away and submit my own test sheets, but with no governing bodies?

all depends on whether the company you're working for is niceic or whatever and will they notify the jobs to labc, or is that going to be down to you?

Its not really complicated, as Eodneil said if you are going to do a lot domestic work, you will need to join a government approved scheme. Otherwise, when you have to notify the LBC (for appropriate electrical work), it would not be cost effective to do that yourself every time. If you join a scheme, and the notification is done via them. But the then the complicated bit, or expensive bit. You have to pay an annual fee to your scheme. It varies, Elecsa is ÂŁ468.

I have a new question. With my first house bash I'm looking to get a consumer unit, and as its 6 meters from the main incomer I also need a kmf, the incomer tails are 16mm. It's a bungalow I'm working on, so the tails could go across the loft to the New location. Should I use 16mm tails with 6mm Earth to go to the new consumer unit or swa? also what size kmf would suit? Ie if it's a 100amp board would it be a 100amp kmf? Thanks in advance

16mm tails OK if not buried in wall/s <50mm deep. otherwise SWA. and fit a 80A KMF. this will be adequate to protect the tails, and give some discrimination with DNO's 100A.
