Just wondering if anyone has installed a Gewiss Restart RCD.I have a customer who would like 2 install but having not used it before I want to know what other thought of it.

Haven't used them but I never grasped the point of them. If you have an insulation or earth leakage problem the chance of it miraculously curing itself and a successful restart happening would be pretty slim.

I have had a demo at there chippenham office and they look good. Around the ÂŁ180 mark

the point is that RCD's can trip due to external influences, and it stops people comming home to a warm freezer or having to go out to a remote monitoring station just to reset an RCD.

It’s technology pinched from the supply industry. auto reclosers are used a lot for rural OH lines.

But in a domestic situation they are dangerous. Reclosing on to a fault is something you don’t undertake lightly. A close friend’s house was gutted by fire due to reclosing on to an earth fault.

Not unless this RCD re-closer has a sensing circuit facility, that won't re-close onto a fault. For 180 odd quid, i'd expect such a sensing facility...lol!!!

I’m going on hypothetical theory, but yes I have looked at their web site. OK the super RCD senses a fault. how does it determine if it’s a transient fault or an established fault? The only way is reclose, now do you set the trip for standard trip time or an extended burn though time. This I can’t determine from the web site how they define the fault. Burn through is how MV auto reclose beakers work:

EF or O/L trip,
A timed gap,
Reclose, short term. If the system holds then reset the system.

If EF or O/L trip happens again,
Timed gap,
Reclose, short term. If the system holds reset the system, if it fails then a longer timed lag before the next reclose.

If EF or O/L trip again then the 2nd sequence starts
Reclose, long term. If held reset system
EF or O/L trip,
Lock out!

The last bit is to burn a fault away, if that fails you’ve f**ked it. I’ve always said I’m an animal with electrickery!
