I’m trying to replace a gfci outlet which does not work in a bathroom at a relatives house which was just purchased. Circuit checker shows no power and no little green light. I checked the breaker, all ON. Switched breakers off then back to on. Still no power. I believe this is the first outlet in a circuit of 3 outlets. This one is the only that has the test buttons. The other two outlets are in the second bathroom. Both of them do not work. I checked the grounds on all three. All tight. Both ground wires coming to the first gfci outlet were wired together and piggytailed to the one ground terminal on the outlet (LOAD and LINE wires). I notice right away that the gfci outlet in the first bathroom had the white and black wires on the wrong side (black to silver and white to gold) as a friend of my relative replaced it. I immediately switched the wires to white/silver and black gold. There is a load on the outlet which I believe powers the other two outlets in the other bathroom. I found the hot black wire in the box and made sure it connected with the LINE connection in back (gold side). The back connections were used. I connected the LOAD wires on the opposite side which I believe goes to the other two outlets. I checked the outlet with the circuit tester, no power. I even tried a NEW gfci outlet, still the same. I did determine that the black (hot) wire at the outlet was hot by checking the actual wire itself in the box and on the gfci. But when I connected the LOAD wires to the outlet, the black LOAD wire showed no power. As if the power stopped in the outlet and did not continue on to load wire. Breaker was on. The test buttons did not work. I even switched out the breaker but no changes. There is another breaker right below the “bathroom gfci” breaker. This is the breaker for the outside gfci outlets. They are also out. Haven’t delved yet into this. I did check every other outlet in the house. They all worked. Not sure what to do next. Oh, the home inspector said that the bathroom outlets worked when he checked them a few weeks earlier. The breaker and outlets are 20a. Hope I explained it adequately. Thanks for any help! Tim
- TL;DR
- GFCI in bathroom not working as well as the other outlets on the circuit. Another gfci circuit also out. Breakers seem fine
