i like many others in the country atm am just about to finish C+G 2330(as well as part p, regs, inspect and test and pat test) and am at the stage of looking for the rare thing of an apprenticeship/ training position.

basically wanted to ask you guys if you think it would be better to go self employed and put myself through the NVQ. a couple of the lecturers at college recon no one is taking on trainees because of the cost for extra insurance and being tied into contracts and all that gumpf.

do employers prefer staff they aren't tied to but would actually have to pay, or a proper apprentice.

would be greatful on your views.

Have you tried your local council or other government area? hospitals etc
Theya are telling everyone to retrain and you may be able to find a way in there.
When you say self employed do you mean subbing in or doing your own work?
As you will be limited to what you can do with a big company i would try for small companys to gain the best all round experience.

i tried all the companies my local council uses about 6 months ago and they have nothing. i'm 23 and did this as a career change which i am having to pay for out my own pocket, other then the course there doesn't seem to be a way into the trade at the moment. and the only guys that i know getting positions are the younger ones who are going to be working for friends of the family and going to be paid in peanuts.

ideally i wanted to get some experience with a small company, get qualified properly and then set up myself.

when i say self employed, i mean subbing for other companies, then doing what domestic stuff i can do myself. if i get stuck on any jobs, bringing someone else in to give me a hand.

just trying to figure if it is a viable option

no, i was an outdoors instructor before this. spent most of my teenage years around the armed forces in one way or another through cadets and the TA. i got sick of getting paid peanuts and moving house every six months to live in a caravan. it was fun, but there gets the point you need to do something you can actually live off.

i have always done DIY stuff myself and very mechanical minded, but the people i know either are instructors, I.T.and electronics types or civil servants. none of them are in trades so it is a case of me starting from scratch.
