hi guys

Just a bit of quick advise needed as I can't seem to find the answer to this online. I am currently working paye for my employer although I am planning on setting up my own company very soon. I have been doing my own work at evenings and weekends and I am starting to get more of this.

I'm not fully ready to make the leap yet however I want to go self employed to keep myself right with the tax man. My question is if I go self employed will my currently employer find out.

I don't want them to know about it, just yet as they may take the hump with me pricing and doing my own work behind their back.

Can anyone advise please?

You can be self employed and employed at the same time.

I don't think it'll affect your PAYE tax code which is the only thing that your employer might notice if it changes.

So effectively my employer wouldn't know, unless my tax code changed which may raise an eyebrow.

I know an accountant does their payroll so they may not even pick up if there was a change. The amount I'll be earning self employed isn't huge anyway although when that increases I'll have left my current employer.

Thanks for reply btw

I take it that the work/who you are doing work for is not in competition to them if it is a local company I bet they will know somehow at some point

No the work I'm doing is domestic/small commercial for a friend of mine who just started his own building firm. Not in direct competition with my employer who targets large commercial, leisure, and industrial projects.
I have thought about telling them also, but would prefer to just leave. Just want to ensure my ducks are all in a row first.

What does your employment contract say about this?

As well as registering with HMRC as self employed, you will need appropriate insurance to cover your work and business cover for your vehicle insurance. How are you going to deal with Part P?

The plan is to join a governing body but as 123 stated it does not apply to us in the messed up wee place of Northern Ireland yet (we do like to be different)
