Discuss Gold card in the Electrician Courses : Electrical Quals area at ElectriciansForums.net

Worked for the same company for ages and got paid as an electrician already
That company might pay you as an electrician without a gold card, but would another company? Would they even give you an interview? Personally I don't like the idea of a company knowing I can't just walk into another job, plus there's always the possibility of the company going bust.

Oh yeah the NVQ3 is just a hoop they make you jump through, and they set it up to make the difference between having a gold card with the words 'approved electrician' on it, and one with 'labourer' or 'trainee' emblazoned across it; they practically 'embarrass' you into doing the NVQ3. To a lay-person 'gold' is always going to be better even if they don't understand what it means, which is where the inspiration came from for my profile picture.

I suppose you have to have something though - to you or I who have been working in the trade for years it's a pointless box-ticking exercise, but at the same time there will be conceited chancers who assume they can be just as competent after a couple of days in a training centre.

I say it all the time on here, but it grates me that I never bothered to do the nvq3 after I did my 2330, and it's something that I've still not done. However, it's the one thing that I want to get done asap, i just think that as a properly trained spark, it's nice to have it, even if nobody outside of a building site understand what it means.

The gold card is a good thing and it's the best we have to show competence at the moment! But let's face it what ever quals we have, and there are a few different ones nowa day they mean absolutely jack all !!! I did my apprenticeship over 20yrs ago and to be honest I can't remember half what I was taught at college seen a few on here harp on about core qualifications and they mean nothing !!you cannot buy experience have 2 lads on our company at the moment that are not qualified but are better than most so called qualified sparks! you learn your trade on the kit not at college
