Was having a think to myself whilst carrying out a PIR on a commercial property that a good idea would be to make it mandatory that the last light in a lighting circuit should be marked at the fitting, even some sort of symbol like a cross to acknowledge that this is where the Zs should be taken

Would save a hell of a lot of time looking above ceilings etc.

And if the circuit is altered move the sticker with the symbol on it

What do you guys think?

We do something similar to this on all PIRs.....last light fitting is labelled with DB/cct/number and an E to signify end of feed.

We generally mark the mid-socket in any ring with an M after the number too.

Good idea, put it forward to British standards. You can even put it under the h&s flag? Less testing and searching, less up and down ladders, less disruption = safer working practice.

Only problem with this is your suppose to check if the CPC is continous, and at each fitting, so if you got a sparks that was a twister of the cable, then it may have fell out of a previous fittings terminal block and leave that fitting without a cpc connection.

When I R2 the fittings whichever reading is the highest I take the Zs from there.

thats fair enough malcolm but when you have got 500+ fittings to checkin a large retail outlet checking each fitting just isn't possible with the prices companies are sticking in for PIR's

I fully agree mate, but that is more a question of finances rather than testing procedures. Like all PIR's it is down to the testers judgement if your actually going to check for the CPC at each fitting or just do a "sample"

As this is an open forum i'm not going to say what I would be doing ..............if you catch my drift ;)

yes i fully agree, if you go into a property and the wiring is on the new side and the general standard of workmanship is very good then you can just do the sampling, but if you go into a property thats 40 year old wining with numerous obvious additions then a more thorough check would definitely be required

Yes, they would show that up, but a quick reference at the circuit schedule on the inside of the DB cover would be more handy than folding out the schematics and then tracing out where the lines lead to!
