Hello all,
I am pretty brand new to this forum and pretty new to the world of electric to be honest.
I am/was (more was now) an IT technician for the NHS - the boys who come and fix the broken stuff.
Whilst working here I met a nice chap who was looking after a very unusual and interesting RFID based system using LON,24v power, junction boxes, relays and mag-locks - he also took care of the CCTV and proximity systems. I found it fascinating but as I was a hardware tech I wasnt able to 'have a go' until he announced to us that he was emmigrating to Canada in about 3 months and the boss sent me over to figure out exactly how it all worked as no one actually knew.
Well 18 months on, I am looking after all of the systems mentioned above and I love it, its frustrating and sometimes annoying but overall its great and very interesting.
One thing I do know however is that there is a whole pile of electronics and indeed electrical installation attached to the system that I tend to have to fix from time to time and not being an electrician or having an electrical background apart from GCSE electronics in 1992 and the things I have picked up as an IT hardware tech, I tend to find it sometimes frustrating to have to wait for someone to do something for me that I could probably do myself if I had the quals.
I am looking into doing day release at college at the moment which is something I may get the ok for - though not sure really as of yet. The course I have looked at is the City and guilds 2330 level 2 as apparently its a good starter course.
So thats it so far, have to see how it develops from here.
my only drawback is that though I did fine in pretty much everything at school and have a BTEC in computer networks and a foundation degree in computing - I was flipping rubbish at maths lol.
Im sure ill figure out all this ohms law stuff - he says
