I'm nearly 30 and not an electrician but I thought you guys would be the ideal people to answer this.

Where are good place(s) to get high quality basic tools?

I bought some cheap screwdrivers a few years ago and they ground down really fast when trying to undo screws that were tough.

I am willing to pay more for high-quality tools, I just wouldn't know where to look.

Are we talking places like B&Q? Or will basic tools from mainstream places like that not last for long, either?

With tools it is like anything, you get what you pay for.
For mechanical tools I have a Hazet set which my father gave me over 30 years ago!
Screwdrivers and the like I use Wiha or Bacho.
If you want items quickly, Screwfix or Toolstation come to mind.
Take care with online resources as there are many fakes around.
Cheers

b&q do CK screwdrivers, they're one of the better makes. most electrical wholesalers do sets, CK, bahco,

As a apprentice in the early 70's Stanley were pretty good tools specially the red handled terminal screwdriver.Nowadays I find ck to be very hard wearing and again their termininal driver is well up to the job their pozi drivers are excellant and will take a lot of stick. All screwdrivers will wear in use & time and as always you get what you pay for. Some years back for around ÂŁ25 I invested in a little 2" linisher machine which is great for reshaping worn edges on screwdrivers.

If you're after non electrical hand tools then snap on are the way to go. Still got a full tool box full from my mechanic days, life time warranty including screwdrivers. Downside is they cost an arm and a leg but last forever.
