Guys,

I just got my first PIR to do after qualifing and wanted to get some pointers. It is for a local pizza shop where I live and is for insurance purposes.

When I go to look this afternoon at the job, I should be asking for past certificates right?
If there is none, is it still a PIR, whats the steps then?
Does a copy get sent to the insurance company by me or do I leave that to the client?

Thanks always,

Past certificates are always nice but not necessary and yes you would still just carry out a PIR.

You must send the original to the person requesting the work, though it is part of an insurance agreement I would imagine the shop as requested you to do it. If it is the insurance company then yes you need ot send them a copy as well.

You will find that 80% of the PIR is visual and you will do 90% of that visual on that first visit. You should look at the workmanship of the installation, the environment and type of installation fitted into that environment and the most important of all the condition.

All of these factors will give you a clue as to what your testing is going to be, such as sampling, what limitations need to be sorted out and access to the installation.

Have you done your quote? have you included on the quote remedial work? have you highlighted your terms and conditions, example would be time tracing circuits, have you allowed for producing schedules for the installation, how are you pricing the work per circuit?

Best bit of advice is as it's your first could you ask, or even pay a more experience sparks to help you do it with him, not let him do it but help him and keep control of the work.

I have not submitted a quote yet, but will allow for the questions you raised. Remedial works are the item which require improvement?
I would be making this as a secondary quote I assumed as a PIR is an assessment of the installation?
That sounded straight out of the classroom LOL,
What are typical T&C's on a PIR, would I use my standard work agreement T&C?

I haven't got any of mine out here with me, but yes a bog standard set of your T&C, but add things like

1. circuit tracing maximum of 30-45 minutes tracing, if not found will be marked down as limitation.

2. Agree on accessories faceplate replacement for cracked/damaged ie switches, sockets etc will be done if accepted at cost plus 15% for material and labour.

3. An unsatisfactory report with codes 1 and 2. All remedial work if requested will be done on a further quote.

4. All fault finding if requested will be done on a day rate of XXXXX

Things like that .

Thank you Malcolm,

Very useful tips and all things I had not considered, not only is my first PIR but it my first job as a new company, hooray.

code 1s Id try and get autherisation to repair imedietly or to isolate circuit till repair carried out
observation look at the full installation if it dowsnt look right it probably isnt As its a Pizza place id suggest trying to do most of the front stuff out of hours as 1 it will get very busy and 2 it will get very HOT even OOH in these places can be difficult as there is a lot of prep work goes on but at least you may get lunch out of it

I can gain access on Saturday morning from 8am, they arrive for 12pm to starting switching on. So it will give me the place to myself )

Made a visit to the pizza shop, and surprisingly the DB looks in good nick. Fully labelled and fairly tidy.
The shop itself looks tatty, double grid lights missing the defusers, broken socket fronts, but mostly not so bad.
I will keep you updated as Im excited about it.

It also turned out to be the owners flat abouve the shop which has two db's, both rewirables. One for the flat and one which require investigation as it has 3 large minerials coming out of it.
The shop manager did not know what they did ;/

I would also ask for a copy of the letter from the insurance company as they may have certain stipulations, for example the PIR to be completed on NIC EIC paperwork
and best of luck

Its all gone to pot now, they pulled out.
I think they thought at the time of my visit I was going to walk in, look around and sign something off. I explained that it does not happen like that and then today a phone call telling me the manager is having difficulties and would be in contact later, when quizzed about the insurance company needing PIR by the 14th Dec; panic set in and they made excuses to end the phone call.

Sad, but I have to work with integrityand dont believe in corner cutting especally when I the one signing it of as safe to use. Still waiting on that first real call for work as a new company, but plenty of time until my job finishes in April )

As per the above reply you may have to get in touch with the insurance company as they are the people requiring the PIR and may have there own views on things like what limitations are acceptable and what percentage of items should be opened for inspection etc
