Hi, i'm doing a bathroom soon and haven't worked as a sparky in a while. I can't remember what the 17th says about bathroom zones. The customer wants downlights across the ceiling and directly above the bath. Am i right in thinking that only the ones above the bath need to be 12 volt and that the rest of them can be 240?

And while i'm here, would a 3 metre run of fan ducting cause any problems with condensation? I can't remember if there's a maximum length that you're supposed to keep to.

Thanks.

Have a look at your OSG. 2.25 m above floor is outside of zone; however fitting has to be suitable for the enviorment it's in. Personally, in bathrooms I use 240v IP65 downlights.

Remember, this work needs to be notified to your LABC.

Don't mess with 12v rubbish, too many parts to go wrong.

Yeah i know, they're gash. I just needed to know which downlights i can put above a bath, it's quite a low ceiling and may well be under 2.2 metres. Do they just have to be IP65? I'll dig out my OSG later anyway.

Thanks again.

Remember, the circuit needs to be from a 30ma RCD too. If you are not a member of a part p scheme you will need to notify LABC in advance, as Ponty said.

Only needs notified if in England & Wales. Scotland I have no idea on, but in Northern Ireland unless council work or Housing Exec work you really only need to be "competent".

There also seems to be a bit of a myth about that down lights in a bathroom and kitchen need to be 12v. I'd fit IP rated GU10's in bathroom, and bog standard in the kitchen, if excess steam floating around there then ventilation is the issue to sort.
