Hi there, I'm new to this forum. I'm going to install a double socket and a light in a garden shed. My plan is to run a switched fused spur off the kitchen ring as a spur to the shed, where I'll put a double pole switch and then the socket and light. I'm using some steel armoured cable underground to run from the fused spur to the double pole switch. I believe this will only require a MWC. Would that be correct? As such its not notifiable, is it? I have the appropriate qualifications (2391, 17th ed etc) but I'm not registered yet (took all the courses and then got a job that didn't require me to get registered) and I am comfortable with the testing required, but as it is a while (about a year ago) that I qualified, the details of certification etc are a bit rusty and I just want to be sure I'm doing it right. Your help and advice would be :38:gratefully received.

first thing is inconvenience when a fault in the shed/garage takes out the RCD on the RFC in the house. the best way would be to come off a non-RCD way in the CU and fit RCD protection at the shed/garage , usually by fitting a sub-main consisting of RCD, 16A and 6A MCBs. cost factors say your way is cheaper.

How can you not know this? If you are a scheme member??

I am not a member of a scheme, I never said I was so I'm not sure what your point is ?
Any domestic I do now is usually under building control and they accept my EIC without question and have done since Part P was first introduced.
I do know that the work that is notifiable has changed recently but that does not affect me on a day to day basis.
The electrical industry is more than just house bashing you know.

I assume you are a member of a scheme ? If you are I hope you feel you are getting value for money from you membership. My point was that for the work that is notifiable ie rooms containing a bath or shower you are paying a lot of money out and jumping through hoops for what must be a small proportion of the average scheme members work.

My point is that its not just bathrooms and yes I'm a scheme member and do other things covered by the English "list"

Yes, thanks all. I have considered coming off the CU as suggested, but does that not then become a new circuit and is therefore notifiable. Its not that I want to avoid notification, necessarily, but as I'm not in a scheme, I'd have to pay someone to inspect and test (or at least confirm the testing), thus increasing my costs significantly.

The house is less than a year old. I've never considered Telectrix's idea! Is there a time limit allowance on notification, then (like how long would it take to join a scheme and then could I retrospectively notify?) I thought I'd need three or four jobs completed to join a scheme, is that not the case, then? As I said, I got a job that didn't require me to be a scheme member, so I've not really pursued it, and the work I'm doing wouldn't lend itself to certification. This shed job is personal, not commercial.

  • Notification period is generally a month from the date the work is completed. That will be the date on the cert.
  • Most schemes will let you do the work and notify after you are registered for the first job. This is normal procedure
  • Look into each schemes individual requirements for memberships. They vary slightly.
  • The size and type of job suitable for assessment will need to be discussed with the relevant scheme, but generally jobs at your own home will be permissible.
