Was reading an article on an American site and it reminded me of this episode.

I was terminating an 11KV cable to a transformer. The works H&S officer turned up, usually a sign of trouble. He’s stood watching which I didn’t mind.
Then it came to wiping the gland and he sticks his oar in. The works rules say that when handling hot metal gloves must be worn. Now if any of you have plumbed a cable you’ll know you need to feel what your doing. He shoots off to his van to get two pairs of gloves for my mate and myself. When he got back he’s horrified to see my mate using a soupspoon to put molten plumbing metal in to the moleskin in my bare hand.
He went berserk! He’s straight on the phone to my manager who then showed up. For once a manager with some sense (also an ex jointer). One H&S bod sent packing with his tail between his legs.
He wouldn’t let the matter drop. There were seven of us on site that could plumb cables, every one of us told him where to go. The only time gloves were worn was for pouring the hot compound.

There must be other jobs that you’ve had to do that have been done the same way since the year dot, now it’s not safe.

Yep! Ladders is probably the most obvious one.

In my (much) younger days, I worked the travelling fairs (Waltzer & Dodgems) If a H&S bod had seen just half of what went on during the build & rip-out he would have had a heart attack on the spot!

My favourite H&S story (not electrics) was an old guy went to an air museum and asked if he could sit in the cockpit of a WW2 bomber for old times' sake. Oh no, he's told, H&S - the luminous paint on the dials is radioactive, you know! "Wish I'd known that when I was flying one of these over Berlin and getting shot at," says the old man.

Hahaha..

when i get moaned at for silly things i point out that i used to

work and sleep within 10 meters of a nuclear reactor receiving constant doses of Alpha Beta and Gamma radiation
never received natural sunlight for 3 months
had to take vitamin supplements to assist with what i missed above
worked on steam, water, oil and air systems
drank UHT milk and deminilarised water
the air i breathed was only changed when toxic levels were reached
i worked 200 meters + under water
we carried high explosive and volatile weapons
our 999 system rang a phone 15 meters away and we dealt with our own emergency's!

and i slept in the bottom bunk underneath a 18 stone man in the middle bunk!!!

how much dangerous can you get

so put my F**king ladder back now and peee off

A friend who worked as a building inspector and has been on every safety course going went onto a site. The site manager insisted on giving him the full 30 minute safety briefing before he was allowed to look around the site. He walked out of the site office and saw a JCB back actor being used to lift plant to a first floor. He goes back to the site manager and reports a H&S infringement. On another part of the site he sees the scaffolding being loaded with stacks of blocks ready for the next lift, when he goes back to the office he reports another H&S infringement. Loads of work for the site manager.

On the next site the manager said you look old enough to know what you are doing are you OK if I tell you about the particular risks on this site? He got a five minute briefing of where the main risks were which included a couple of wells. He did not find any H&S infringement.
