Hi,
anyone know if I need a neutral conection to a Hager ES240 contactor or can I use it to switch live only?

You need a neutral / return for the coil, yes, but the contacts are just acting to switch a circuit - think of a lightswitch.

Now, it gets slightly complicated by the fact that the 'neutral' out of the coil could also be used to supply something else, another contactor maybe. So in that respect you have to think of the live-live way of working - again, think of a lighting circuit switch.

Thanks for the reply - this may be where I am getting confused. The Hager ES240 has only 4 terminals 1,2,3,4 - I assume 1 & 3 on the top for supply power & 3 & 4 on the bottom for switched power - would it then be fair to assume that (1) incoming 'L' (3) incoming 'N' with 'N' teed across to the switched circuit 'N' terminal (2) Switched 'L' - load (4) Control 'L' - from external device? or have I got it completely worng??
trouble is that the contactors were fitted by a 3rd party and no instructions left on site.

I'm struggling to remember exactly (and I only fitted a load last week!) but I think the coil terminals aren't actually numbered - you might have to take it off the rail and check. The 1,2,3,4 terminals are indeed 1>2 and 3>4 top to bottom, as it's a 2x N/O device. The coil terminals are just in front of where you'd normally look for them, top and bottom.

EDIT: just realised I'm talking about ES220's, not sure what the difference is, just off to grab the catalogue!

Indeed, which is just as well as the catalogue info is as clear as mud!

with contactors and relays they are usually numbered. say a 4 pole relay. The coil is A1 and A2
pole 1 is common = 11, NC is 12 and NO 14
pole 2, 21= common, 22 NC, 24 NO
pole 3, 31= common, 32 NC 34 NO
pole 4, 41= common, 42 NC, 44 NO

thanks guy's, just about cleared it up now - so I take it that the switched live & neutral from my controller go accross A1 & A2 - incoming supply feed accross 1 & 3 & outgoing switched load accross A2 & A4????????????

You only need to switch the lines and the contactor is rated per pole so for example a 16A four pole contactor would be fine.
