In July I moved into my new home with Schluter DITRA heated floors in the bathroom. The floor quit working in December, and my GC and a rep from the flooring company that did the heated floor install were here on Friday to troubleshoot with Schluter on the phone. I was home but in another room, and I could hear them (my GC is the loudest person in the world). I heard them say that the issue was that the thermostat and supply were 240v, but they used 120v wire in the floor itself because it was cheaper. When I asked them directly about it, they both told me that anything would be speculation at this point and we’d have to wait for Schluter to come onsite. A Schluter technical rep called me right after they left and said that they would come out and help find where the wires failed so they could be patched, but my floor will have no warranty since it was installed incorrectly.
My questions are 1. How dangerous was it to have double the power supply running to those wires for five months and 2. Wouldn’t the insulation on the wires be degraded at this point? Right now I’m not thinking that “patch it and hope for the best” is an acceptable solution.

- TL;DR
- Installers used the wrong (cheaper) wires in heated floor, they burned out. How big of a safety issue is this and could the wire insulation be degraded by months of use?
