Does the consumer unit have to be between 450mm and below 1200mm in an old house? In the electricians guide to building regs its states "new dwellings". The guy I`m doing the rewire for doesn`t want a board half way down his wall but the electrician who is signing it off said it has to be????

Any thoughts?

Andy

No it doesnt. The regs are not retrospective, and so on old property it doesnt have to comply with Part M. It is nice of you can relocate it at rewire stage but its not always possible. However you will need to bear in mind when you sign cert "adequacy of access to isolating devices/switchgear etc etc" ,cant remember the exact phrase but its on the test and inspection part of the EIC.

Cheers...Howard

It would be possible as we are re-wiring now but he would prefer it further up the wall near the ceiling out of the way.

Its a low ceiling as the house is 400 years old.

Building Regs give 450mm to 1200mm for switchs sockets etc. Next paragraph is the consumer unit and does not give any heights just states that it should be readily accessible and applies to new dwellings rewires are excluded. All on page 137 if you have the book.

Consumer unit should be a bit higher anyway stops kids sticking their fingers in to see what happens.

Hope that helps

Put it where you want, but make sure its accessible for obvious reasons. Accessible also means being able to get the front cover off for access to the inards if needed.;)
