Hi Everyone,

Am new to the Site and posting my 1st msg.

Just wanted to introduce myself and get a bit of advice if at all possible.

My name is Gavin and I am 30 years old. I am as keen as mustard as I have started down the long and what I hope to be a successful path of a career change. I have always had an interest in being an Electrician but followed advice and other opportunities which lead me down different paths which I have been reasonably successful in.

My interest in being a electrician started at School with Work Experience and then onto college where I studied and passed the old C&G 2360 on a full time course along with some work experience.

I know this is now pretty much irrelevant as I never took the qualification further at the time (hindsight is a wonderful thing). So to enable me to get into the Industry now I have studied and passed the C&G 2330 level 2 course at a local training centre. I also did my 17th edition and a 2392 inspection and test course which I was told would go nicely along with my Level 2 2330 qualification as the qualification would allow me to work on a domestic premisses and then inspect and test that premise i.e. more relevant than doing a Part P course. I have also got myself a CSCS.

I have been banging out CVs to all local and not so local companies to no avail at present. I know this is not a great time to be doing this and understand that is tough. I am just looking for a opportunity to gain the site experience that I lack.

Should I be stating work for free in CV's I send or does that put people off?

I am not stupid and know guys are struggling to make ends meet but I could get by as I have other P-time work which means I can offer this to show willingness and commitment.

Also just wondered if anyone out there could offer some advice on next steps regarding training.

I was told that I would pretty much need a Job in the industry to continue to study the 2330 level 3 as to pass it my work would need to be assessed on site that I have carried out. Is this the case?

Are there any other qualifications that I would need to gain/ suggest I gain?

Thanks for your time.

Welcome to the forum.
You don't strictly need to be working in the industry to do the level 3, but you will need it for the NVQ3 (C&G 2356) which is site-based.
I would say offering to work for free would put employers off - they want a professional rather than an amateur volunteer, and offering to work for free would leave them wondering what your angle is.

Wierd isn' it. I'm having difficulty getting an get an electrician to come and quote for a new installation. Those that have come out I never hear from again. Is it my aftershave or what?

Depends who you've been asking. There are a lot of inexperienced new domestic installers out there who may have taken one look at it, decided they were in way over their head and simply run away.
You may be better off getting a larger company who will actually be able to do it.

Many thanks for all the welcomes and tips received guys.

Looking forward to future answers from you all as I am sure I will have many questions to come.
