Ok heres my problem.
I have an old GPO box bringing the outside telephone line into my house.
This GPO box has a wire running from the box around the room and connects to my master socket on the skirting board.
Basically i want to replace the wire that connects the GPO box to the master socket (as mine is currently very old/dirty and i need it slightly longer so i can conceal the wire properly).
I have very limited electrical knowledge an have been quoted some pretty steep prices to have this cable replaced.

My question is basically can i do the re-wiring myself? and if so what wire do i need and where can i get one from? i bought an extension kit (thinking the wire inside would be the same) but the wire has only 4 internal wires where as the current old wire has 6. Im desperate to sort this out. any help would be much appreciated.
Thank you

Bascally no as this is the property of BT and should not be touched.

I know BT own the line but as i dont have a current contract with them (im with orange who rent the line off BT) they said they wont do it and to contact Orange, who in turn tell me to contact BT.... Ive been passed back and forth for 2 weeks now and have decided to get it done myself or by an electrician if need be.

Even tho Orange rent the line from BT the line is still owned by BT and therefor is their responsibility to repair. My OAP grandfather lives in the house with and the wires are a trip hazard. No company is accepting any responsibility for my maintenance, am i left with no choice but to get the work done privately?

I used to work for bt (or the devil as I like to call them) - anything from where the drop wire comes to the house is your problem, i.e. if they fix it, they will charge you, ergo you can replace this yourself if you wish.
Are there different coloured pairs of wires in the main cable? A blue/blue white, orange/orange white and a green/green white. The truth is you usually only need two wires, but you need the right cable grade and as its an old GPO istallation you will probably need some specialist tools such as a crone connector.
Where abouts are you? Anywhere near Newport (S Wales)?

Im near Birmingham west midlands.
Yes i have coloured coded wires but they are all jumbles and so far ive not had the courage to touch anything.
Can i just buy a new lead to replace the one thats installed? that way i can match up the coloured wires with the new if they are both the same?

I would recommend getting a spark out if you aren't sure (for God's sake dont get BT out), but i'll send you a private message.

Hi Rocker, what private message re you sending?
I dont have any in my inbox?
Cheers

Hi Rocker,
if i attempt to use the wire i have bought with the extension kit, which coloures do i replace the blue and blue/white wires with?
i think i have a green, yellow, red and black (if ive remembered correctly)?
does it matter which colour goes where as long as they match at the other end at the master box?
Cheers

Yes, as long as you have the same pair from the master to your box, then it will be fine, regardless of colour.

So maybe use red and yellow for eg.

Just make a note of what colours terminate where in the GPO box and outlet box and you are good to go.

You could cut the cable at both ends, leaving the ends connected until you connect the new ones using the correct pair.

However, all at your own risk, and if still unsure, call out a local sparky.

You could always clip the cable in first and all he has to do is connect it up.

Probably for drink too, if its on his way home, but not guarenteed.

:D

Thanks Jason,
Im eager to get home and have a go now...
If all else fails i'll have to pay to get someone to put it right

Success....
Thanks for everyones advice, my broadband seems much faster now.
:)

Ignore the post in #3 it is of no help. Hopefully someone may know but it maybe a longshot, have you asked on a more specific appliances forum?
