Hi All,

Need some help as im getting so much conflicting advice...

I am looking to buy a dual fuel cooker which has 2.2kw electric consumption in the oven, but I only have the bog standard mains sockets in the kitchen.

Some people have told me this is ok to wire into this and other have said that it wont work...

help would be appriciated..

thanks

Have a look at the specifications - it may well say that it has to be hard wired into a cooker outlet or it could say that it is supplied with a plug top. You really need to hard wire it if the manufacturers instructions say that, rather than cobbling together a 3 pin plug onto it as you risk invalidating the warranty.

2.2kW only draws a max current of 9.6amps and plugs can have a 13amp fuse fitted but even so it is better to plug/hard wire it into its own radial circuit rather than into an ordinary ring as you risk overloading that circuit and causing other problems.

Appendix 15 of BS 7671: 2008 gives advice on ring final circuits and sharing / spreading the load around the circuit. This reg suggests that cookers, ovens and hobs over 2 kW should be on their own dedicated circuit. But its only a suggestion, however, the important thing to remember is that no pert of the circuit should be overloaded by plugging in the cooker.

this is just in a grey area that could be ok or not. all depends if the ring main is heavily loaded, eg washing machine, tumbler etc. best advice is a separate dedicated supply, if only to allow for overkill and/or future increase in load. it's a situation needs to be looked at on it's own, taking all factors into consideration.

I guess the easiest way would be to run a supply from ignition /aux via a relay that drops the supply when the lights are on.
