Hi all,

I am nothing to do with electrics, but need some help & advice for a DIY project.

SO....... we have 2 wall lights in our dinning room, one of which we have taken down & placed a wooden dresser unit in front of it. We would like to use the electric power cables from the wall light (powered by switch at other side of room) to light some down lighters/plinth lights that we would like to fit within the dresser which has glass cupboards, this allowing the room to be just as light as before.

Hope this makes sense and someone out there (in laymans terms) can help me? PLEASE????? I've tried & tried searching the net but cannot find anything that is written in 'laymans terms' that I can follow.

Hi Maz, welcome to the forum, I have given you access to the general forum for a speedier response, when admin' next on line you may be given DIY access and the thread relocated. :)

To be honest this is a piece of cake for an electrician and should not cost much, depending on the light fittings.

It can certainly be done, but a lot of guys will be a bit reticent about giving you advice. You say you know nothing about electrics. Do you think you are competent to do the job. If you go off half cocked you could seriously injure someone.

Have an electrician test the circuit and (if acceptable) fit a BS546 socket outlet and matching plug on the dresser lights. That way the dresser can be moved and the lights disconnected e.g. for decorating. But do not fit a socket outlet until the tests have been done on the circuit.

As above I'd probably go with a 5A socket but it's not a job you can do yourself I'm afraid.

Thank you all. When I say I'm a novice. I mean we have no qualifications
However my husband is more than capable & has put new sockets in and
light fitting from a ring main. He's not a sparky but is not afraid to do simple
Tasks. The issue we have here was that we were unsure if the voltage from
The wall light would be too high for what is in essence under cupboard or plinth
Lighting. As most of the packs we could find came with plugs on them so we
were afraid of the power issue. Does that makeore sense of my question x

Your post is worrying...does your husband posses the necessary test equipment to complete the required tests before and after? Its obviously not a simple task for your husband to undertake as you've had to come on here and ask advice on your husbands behalf. What makes you and your husband think the voltage from the lighting circuit will be to high? Imo this only proves the shear lack of understanding of basic electrical principals! Following on how did your husband install lights off of the ring main as you put it? The best advice has already been given in the above posts and can only be repeated.....get an electrician in who understands what they are doing. Electricity kills and people with no knowledge or little knowledge (which in all honestly can prove more dangerous than someone without knowledge) shouldn't be dabbling with electrics. It could result in injury or worse to yourself and others. Regards lee

Thank you all for your help & advice. I am very grateful. Although leesparkykent your aggression is unnecessary. I was only asking a question. I have my answer. I will get someone in to do the job. But you really do not need to be so patronising and rude. Thank you to everyone. Maz x

My post wasn't intended to be aggressive or rude, I apologise if you feel it was. I was following on from your post which implied your husband is more than capable to do this and that it was a simple task after already being given the advice several times to get an electrician in.

...Never mind,Lee...the other morning,i was up early,and whilst loading up the Troll,i noticed a woman,walking a dog,racing past,in the quiet,dawn frost.

I saw her scarf, being trailed behind the dog, before falling to the pavement. I shouted "excuse me!",and got a torrent of abuse, regarding a particular turd not being delivered by her beast...

She then saw the scarf, rushed back to pick it up,and scurried off, without an apology...

So i too, know the forlorn sadness,at being on the wrong end of a stick, albeit a brown one :blush5:
