Recently fitted a 3 x 4ft fluros - anti corrosive/IP rated, in a pub kitchen.

Didn't even think about heat dissipation - stupid me.

The one that is nearest to the cooking area has now become brittle and has come off its fixings.

So went back to the wholesaler and it's only rated up to 25 degrees, apparently this goes for most of the other decent makes like fitzgerald etc ? Is that right.

So what they've quoted me for is a fitting that is rated up to 55degrees, and apparently its explosion proof. It's a make called Hil Clare @ ÂŁ120+vat.

Bit of an expensive mistake on my behalf.

Anyone else had a problem like this before ?

And are there any other cheaper makes that are also rated up to a higher temp ?

Many Thanks,

Sy

It's not just me then :stuart: thought about blaming it on the wholesaler's but held my hands up on this one

can i ask how you fitted these, if you didnt use supplied hangers or ceiling brackets then they will all fall down in time even within ambient ranges, i myself have fallen foul as you expect a base of a fitting to be able to hold its own weight but with these type not so unless you use the brackets supplied, p..s..d me right of as never come across a fitting ever that cant hold it own weight if you create you own fixing points, had mine drilled out 20mm holes where they were imprinted in the plastic and fitted hooks but fell down within 2 weeks after serious cracks developed.... manufacturers said it can only be fitted as per instructions which must agree i skipped over as you do with something you expect out of a light fitting --- after making my complaint they said they would replace them if i took them back to wholesalers.
My strong argument that the fitting wasnt designed for the market needs and posed a risk to all installers backed them down a little, wholesaler had had 40 returned already that year ... what it comes down to is an expectancy for a fitting to have the ability to at least support its own weight if you were to diviate from the fixing recommendations to suit your situe', what i see now in these same fittings is the same set-up but a clear warning and advisory about mounting them.
I consider this a learning curve i shouldnt have had to learn and put it down to designers lack of foresight in to which market he was selling to and the habits of that market. The fitting enclosure is common to most brands out on the market so eyes open if you havent fitted one yet.
P.S. no i didnt read the info' sheet but when you've fitted flourescents for 20yrs its just the norm to expect a fitting to ..well act like any other fitting.

Sorry to say its the manor in which you've fixed them then rather than the oven, all the heat has done has accelerated the issue, if you can get some mounting clips from supplier assuming you've thrown the supplied ones and remount using the clips, also some makes are not for surface mounting but hanging only so be careful. Yes; the one next to oven should be temp rated but i fear you will have to replace all the fixings of the others, penny washes still wont hold them it will just take a few more months to structurally fail. This is a common oversight been done by junior and experienced sparkies so dont beat yourself up too much, id replace them all thus fitting as instructed take the fitting and order fixing kits then use them next time or this will be haunting you and discrediting you for many months ..... just fob the customer off with a recall on the batch you got and youll cover the replacements then you keep face, but may have to wait for another job t off-load ...alternatively you can contact your wholesalers explaining they are cracking on there fixing etc the may take the back if they are unaware of the real story.

Spot on thank you mate.... and I'm definitely one to loose sleep over something like this... always worrying about something or maybe I'm just conscientious.

Gonna change the lot and do it properly this time.

This customer gives me a lot of work so its the least I can do.

Like the idea that there may have been a recall on this batch, will be using that little line.

Thanks again,

Sy

Never heard o this. I've fitted quite a few, same thing, penny washers and 8s screw. Or mounted onto conduit boxes with M4s. Never in hot areas though, and haven't heard of them failing. Also fitted them onto lighting trunking using 20mm bush and lock ring, again, still up years later, 5 foot emergency doubles too.

Interesting thread though. Now I know what those metal clips are for that I just throw away with all the other 'bits you don't need! except the spare blank grommet. Keep those for all the metal clad boxes I knock out the wrong way!
