i am currently replacing the fronts on the sockets and light switches in a houe, i completed upstairs without a hitch but when i turned the downtairs socket ring off and replaced a double socket and a single one the rccd started tripping out, ive tried turning all the mcb,s off but its still triping has anyone got any ideas why this is happening as all i did was change the front on a single and a double socket, so i cant understand what has changed to make this happen,I even disconnected the earth from the fuse box to make sure it wasnt an earth problem and its still tripping out even with all the circuits turned off, any ideas would be greatly appreciated
Thanks Jonny

Hi jonny the rcd unit also monitors neutral & earth so a;lthough you have turned off the mcb to the sockets the neutral and earth remain connected in the board and when you change your socket you must be touching the wires together.
Simply open fuse board and drop out the ring main neutrals for the said circuit until youve done.
It is possible it is finding another earth parth back if youve disconnected them.

may be a slight nick on one of the neutral cables and when u pushed the cables back it is touching the metal back box? just an idea.....take the sockets back off and have a look :)

Agree with Claire.

If everything was working fine before, and you have swapped out the sockets etc, it sounds like you have caught a plate screw on one of the cables.

Done it many a time :D

Which rcd is it? Is it one for everything, one for a few circuits?

My guess is an earth to N fault in the damaged light fitting. This will become a problem when other devices draw large currents.
