Help replacing fuse.

Adam Smith

Hello all,

I need to find a fuse carrier to fit in to a grid switch on a job but am having a hard time finding it.
I've found out that it's made by Dorman Smith Britmac (Logo is a 'B' within a diamond) but can't find anywhere online selling them.

Has anyone come across one of these before?

Thank you.

can't tell from the pic. it's too small. but looks like a 20mm glass fuse. measure the length and what rating is it?

Can you take the switch plate apart to remove the fuse module itself. You might have better luck replacing the whole part rather then just the carrier. If you can't find a replacement can you just extend the cables and fit a FCU beside the grid switch. If the customer isn't happy with that then you may need to replace the whole switch. Ebay sometimes brings up stuff but the closing looking item i can find is a old MK part but it doesn't look exactly right and it's an expensive attempt at a replacement if it doesn't fit.

If you click on the pictures you should get a larger view. It takes a standard 13amp cartridge fuse. Measures just a few mm wider and longer than the fuse.

The only reference of use I could find to the carriers was:

http://www.hse.gov.uk/foi/internalops/fod/oc/400-499/483_5.pdf

There is an address and phone number listed, but may be out of date. Companies house gives the current details as:

Name & Registered Office:
BRITMAC (UK) LIMITED
OLD LINEN COURT
83-85 SHAMBLES STREET
BARNSLEY
SOUTH YORKSHIRE
S70 2SB

That looks to be their accountants but may give you a start if the first link is no good.

as dunc says, it looks like the old MK as fitted in FCUs in the 60's and 70's. try ebay.

Sticking an FCU next to the grid is the next option if I can't find a replacement easily / affordably. It's a grubby flat in Camberwell that's inhabited by students so it doesn't have to look brilliant :)

Will probably give up on a replacement pretty soon!!

ok if it's students, just bung in a nail.

But the fuse carrier's missing so how's he supposed to fit the nail? A paperclip would be much easier to bend in to shape and wedge in the terminals, it will carry plenty enough load and a bit of insulation tape will be a good optional extra just incase there's any risk of it shorting out on the metal front plate. ;)

I had the same problem about 3 months ago it was a old 3 gang MEM grid switch and as they are no longer made I had to change it to the current MK version.

As I said to the tenant at the time it was a great idea but not in a domestic situation

It's also a radial with 2.5mm sitting on a 32amp breaker. Would be a right proper bodge job!!!

(Breaker has been locked off and will be replaced btw :P)
