Friend of mines dryer machine has stopped working, 2 days out of warranty.
I am trying to help theme out as money is tight for them however, I'm a little unsure my diagnosis is correct and I don't want them spending unnecessarily on replacement parts.
The dryer is a Candy machine and has a small induction motor with a 5uF capacitor. When you try and start a programme the dryer clicks and then a humming noise which stops after around 30 seconds, there's also a burning smell. If you keep doing this the motor gets quite warm.
So, I suspected the capacitor, i tested it and its measuring exactly 5uF. I did this with my fluke meter and the connections removed from the capacitor, I also made sure it was discharged.
I removed the motor from the machine. The motor shaft spins freely and i could not see any signs of damage or discolour. I started a programme again and the motor shaft started to spin very slowly and then stopped, again with a humming noise and then a burning smell. I have tried assisting the motor by turned the shaft by hand, but with no luck.
I cannot find a wiring diagram for this motor but I assume it is a induction motor with run and start windings. The reason I suspect this is because, there are 3 cables feeding the motor from the control board, 2 of these conductors are connected to the capacitor.
When the programme starts there is 230v to earth on all the cables that feed the motor and the capacitor.
I have concluded that the motor is at fault but I am not 100% sure I have followed all the tests possible to conclude this for sure.
